Through the months of January and February, high winds and rain sweep through the gorge around mile 55 on the highway 14 roadway and rail lines. In 2014 I observed piles of coal dust accumulating along the roadway and in shallow pools leading to the river near the Drano lake parking area and boat ramp. Piles of coal dust have accumulated along the roadway from tunnel 5 toward mile 55. It is an extremely windy area with ample rain to wash this coal into the river. It is my guess that the rip rap of the rail bed is full of coal that will wash off into the river for years.
